Do they are don’t they? Just for fun, we’re going to take a look at some of the original Star Wars characters and guess if they would smoke marijuana.... We have to begin with Luke Skywalker, the first protagonist we meet in the original Star Wars. Luke was not exactly likeable at first. He was whiney and complained. He also had a bit of an attitude. So I’m going to guess the little do-gooder would say no to someone passing him a joint. At least when he was younger. Clearly, once we see him as an old man living on an island in the latest film, he learned to chill. Next up is Luke’s twin, Leia. Princess Leia that is. Leia is a bad ass! She’s smart and extremely sassy. She doesn’t take crap from anyone, not even Darth Vader confronting her. Yes, she would smoke weed. She would do it proudly and stay fully functional too. Luke’s first teacher was Obi Wan Kenobi, who was very wise. Obi Wan definitely liked to smoke, since he had a hookah in his little hut. He also spoke about wanting a drink in at least one of the movies. So yes, Obi Wan would definitely enjoy a puff puff pass session. Han Solo was doper than dope. He would have undoubtably loved marijuana! He was generally not a fan of any rules. He was also the most fun of any of the Star Wars gang, always cracking a joke and wanting to enjoy his time. Plus, he spoke to and understood a wookie. Or at least he claimed to. Definitely smoking some strong stuff! And let’s not forget Han’s bff, Chewbacca. Chewy seems like he’d definitely like to take a toke or two with his buddy Han. Chewy would need a big fat blunt for his big hands, or paws or whatever they are. In the Empire Strikes Back we first meet Yoda. He’s the ultimate master. And the ultimate mellow, cool vibing dude. One look at his eyes and his chill demeanor means yes... Yoda would be the master of weed. Also first met in the Empire Strikes back is the smooth talking Lando Calrissian. No need to think about it, this charmer oozed with style and charisma. Plus, he lived in Cloud City! Say no more... definitely a yes. Lando is lit. Now on to the dark side.... Let’s start with an obvious one: Jabba the Hutt. That thing never took his hookah out of his mouth except when it fell out while he slept. He puffed away non stop. But would it have been marijuana? By the looks of him, he was well beyond the munchies. He was probably addicted to the nasty “Spice” that he was known for smuggling. Boba Fett’s gonna have to be a no. So stern and scary. No chill in him whatsoever. And of course, there's Darth Vader. What would he do when handed a joint? It’s pretty obvious he would smack it away and choke whoever handed it to him. But who else needs it more? The dude was in a lot of pain under all that meta and machinery. Plus, he needs to calm the hell down. He needs to hook up his breathing mask to a bong right away, and breath deep. Go back to being Annakin, Darth! There’s one more we should cover, and that’s the evilest of them all: the Emperor. Clearly that dude is a tweaker who needs a serious nap, a good meal, and a huge amount of cannabis. Someone pass that guy a joint!!!

Han Solo was the king of cool throughout the Star Wars series. Maybe only Lando Calrissian could rival his level of charm and charisma. Now we know why.... Harrisson Ford, who played Han Solo, liked to smoke weed! And actually, more than that, rumor has it that he was actually the dude you went to back before dispos. He was referred to as a Hollywood dealer back before his big break. Harrisson had been living and working in the Hollywood area for about 10 years before his breakthrough with American Graffitti and Star Wars. He auditioned for what he could, and made ends meet with odd jobs, including carpenting, but maybe that didn’t always make ends meet. Michelle Phillips, from the band the Mamas and the Papas, said that when she first saw Star Wars, she did a double-take and shouted, "That's my pot dealer!" She later explained that she "didn't even know Harrison was an actor.” Supposedly he also supplied the Doors with weed. His Star Wars love, Leia, played by Carrie Fisher, documented his love of cannabis in her autobiography, The Princess Diarist. Carrie wrote about the her short fling with Harrisson while filming the first Star Wars. Carrie said Harrisson’s weed had a “brutal strength,” and that it made her "forget most of 1976.” Carrie said the king of cool would smoke a large joint as he was driven daily to the set. She also said Harrisson once even came up with the ingenuous solution of heating up a saucepan to get high one day when he ran out of papers. As for later years, Harrisson Ford kept things pretty quiet publicly with marijuana. But, there were some rumors that as recently as the fourth Indiana Jones movie, that he would blaze up with co-star and screen son Shia LaBeouf. Allegedly, the two of them used Harrisson’s trailer to smoke between takes, and even created code names for being high. Man I wish I knew what those were! In her autobiography, The Princess Diarist, Carrie Fisher, aka Princess Leia, first tried weed when she was 13 years old. Carrie said she found some left by houseguests and took it. Her famous mother, Debbie Reynolds found out, and rather than being mad, Carrie says she said, “Dear, I thought instead of you going outside and smoking pot where you might get caught and get in trouble. I thought you and I might experiment with it together.” She didn’t take her mother up on the offer: ‘At the time I couldn’t think of anything weirder.’ Carrie’s mother forgot about it, so Carrie and her friend May tried it on their own in their backyard treehouse. Carrie said, "And you've got to figure I enjoyed it, because I ended up experimenting with marijuana for the next six years...” Carrie stopped smoking weed while filming Star Wars, but not after sharing some with her co-star Harrison Ford, Mr. Han Solo himself. Carrie wrote that she and Harrisson had short fling while filming the first Star Wars. Carrie said Harrisson’s weed had a “brutal strength,” and that it made her "forget most of 1976.” The brief affair ended when the first Star Wars wrapped. Her love for marijuana ended then, too. Carrie wrote, "Where at the onset it was all giggles and munchies and floating in a friendly haze—it suddenly became creepy and dark and scary.” It could have had something to do with the 19 year old Carrie falling head over heels in love with the 35 year old Harrisson, who wasn’t feeling quite the same love as her. After all, she herself said it was just a 3 month affair where they got together once a week to smoke and have sex. So maybe the strong weed was an association with the strong feelings painfully losing a love. Carrie said, “Though there has been some speculation regarding my drug use during Star Wars, I used nothing other than Harrison’s pot on the weekends during that first film. After that, marijuana was no longer possible for me—it had such a powerful, all-consuming effect on me that I have never used that drug again.” The ever so smooth Ewan McGregor who played Obi Wan Kenobi in the three prequel Star Wars films didn’t ever speak about being high on the Star Wars set, but he did while on at least one other film! McGregor spoke about the incident which took place while filming the 1996 film, Velvet Goldmine. McGregor told an interviewer that he was stunned by the drinking and drugs on the set. He said, "They put real joints and real champagne there, so everyone was off their tits, and I remember looking over and going, 'I never saw that before on a set'." McGregor hasn’t spoke any more about marijuana, so it’s not known if the still partakes. But he did say, "I don't drink any more and I used to drink a lot. Back in those days, it was a bit out of control, which is one of the reasons I had to stop.” Sadly we haven’t been able to dig up any dirt on Darth Vader and weed. The actor who portrayed the Annakin Skywalker and Darth Vader in the three Prequel Star Wars movies, Hayden Christensen, has remained mum on the subject publicly. However, it must be said that Darth Vader’s crazy breathing contraption helmet certainly would make for an epic personal bong. There are several drugs mentioned throughout Star Wars lore, in the movies, books, and tv series. But, we’re just going to look at two mentioned specifically in the blockbuster movies that people are most familiar with. First, we’ll look at Spice, which was first mentioned at the very beginning of the original Star Wars. When Imperial troops boarded the space ship they were on, C-3PO said to R2-D2, "We'll be sent to the Spice Mines of Kessel, smashed into who-knows-what!" Spice was also the reason Han Solo had trouble with Jabba the Hutt and ended up frozen in carbonite. Han Solo had been smuggling a load of Spice for Jabba the Hutt onboard the Millenium Falcon. Solo said he had an “Empire entanglement” and dumped the whole cargo. Jabba held Solo responsible for the loss of money and placed a bounty on his head. Spice was described as, "highly prized, highly expensive, and highly illegal.” It was also called, "the plague on the galaxy; a horribly addicting drug that its victims would lie, steal, assault, and murder for." It was mined on the planet Kessel. Next up, are Death Sticks. Death Sticks were first mentioned in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. A young Annakin Skywalker and his Jedi Master instructor, Obi Wan Kenobi were on the planet Coruscant, and while searching for a bounty hunter, they went into a popular gambling nightclub called The Outlander Club. Once inside, a shady character tried to sell Obi Wan something called “Death Sticks.” Obi Wan pulled a jedi mind trick on him and sent the man home to go rethink his life, which he did. Death sticks were a highly addictive and easily accessible inexpensive drug, sourced from a type of mushroom extract. Death Sticks caused a mild hallucinogen effect with the user feeling total euphoria at first use. But after the initial high, the users experience ended in a horrific twisted version of reality. With each dose, the user's life was shortened, and the successive dosages took away larger chunks from a lifespan. The death sticks came in either liquid form or dry granules. Star Wars was filmed in the 70s, when marijuana was everywhere in Hollywood. No one knows if George Lucas smoked. Could be, because of all his creativity. But also maybe not. After all, he was a pretty busy guy with a lot of work to do. But in his series, there are some references to what could be weed. Jabba the Hutt smoked from a hookah type water pipe. It’s never revealed what’s in his hookah, but it certainly could have been some of the drugs mentioned in the series such as spice, which jabba smuggled. Whatever it was, Jabba smoked constantly, never stopping except while sleeping. In the original Star Wars, Obi Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker walk into a Cantina. There, one shady character has a pig like nose and is smoking from a hookah hose. This character, Dannik Jerriko was released as an action figure by Hasbro in 2005 with a hookah on his belt. But hookahs weren’t just for bad guys, and so there was probably something they could smoke which was not an illicit drug. We know this because the very wise and good Obi Wan Kenobi had his own hookah. It has also been pointed out by several eagle eyed fans that his hookah is visible in the first movie, sitting in the corner of his hut on Tatooine. |
