Residents of New York and Connecticut are starting their year off well, with recreational cannabis! In addition to those states, Missouri will follow by also having their recreational sales start within this new year. New York’s Governor, and the state Cannabis regulation authorities, kept their promise to begin recreational, adult use cannabis sales before the end of 2022. And on Thursday, December 29th, they did just that, with sales officially begining. The very first sale was made by the state’s top cannabis regulator, and sales to the general public began later in the day, at 4:20 PM. Governor Kathy Hochul spoke about the state’s goal to prioritize equity, saying they were, “creating inclusive opportunity” and that funds from sales would be “directed to our schools and revitalizing communities." Over in Connecticut, their recreational adult use sales starts Tuesday, January 10th, 2023. The first locations to start selling recreational products to all adults will be existing medical dispensaries that have also been approved to expand to adult-use sales via a new “Hybrid license.” Long lines are expected, but after years of waiting for recreational sales to begin, a little bit more of a wait in stores, shouldn’t be a problem. Connecticut’s retail sales are following Governor Ned Lamont’s announcement that in conjunction with the legalization bill, the state has expunged thousands of state level convictions for marijuana-related offenses. On January 1st, 2023, Governor Lamont tweeted, “As of this morning, our administration has marked 42,964 cannabis convictions erased, as planned. It’s one step forward in ending the War on Drugs and giving our citizens a second chance to achieve their dreams.” Over in Missouri, voters approved recreational cannabis sales in November 2022. Dispensaries can open their doors for sales as early as February 6th, provided they are able to obtain licensing approval quickly enough. There are several steps involved in licensing, but it’s expected that the the adult use cannabis market will be fully functioning at some point in 2023. Comments are closed.
