Akerna, an enterprise software company focused on serving the cannabis, hemp, and CBD industries released a flash report which looks at current buying trends in cannabis. Their latest report shows that the market share of cannabis purchases by women is increasing year by year. In 2021, women were responsible for 38.3% of all cannabis purchases. Women are buying flower the most, at 45%, followed by cartridges and pens, at 34%. Concentrates and edibles each came in far lower, at just under 10% for each. Women spent an average of $123.41 per purchase of medical marijuana. Adult-use (recreational) sales for women averaged lower at $76.80. According to the Akena report, the females most likely to purchase cannabis products were less than 30 years old (27.3%), followed by 30-40 year olds (29.3%), then 40-50 year olds (19.2%), followed by 50-60 year olds (13.6%), and finally those over 60 (10.6%). Akerna Chief Executive Officer Jessica Billingsley wisely points out that businesses would be savvy to pay attention. She said, "I expect to see more and more brands targeting their products and marketing towards women in the coming years. Otherwise, they will risk losing participation in this growing market to the competition who does." Catherine Cole / The M News Comments are closed.
