Handwritten Letter from Brittney Griner is Delivered to President Biden on Independence Day7/6/2022
WNBA Superstar Brittney Griner is scheduled to have her trial in Russia begin this week. Griner is facing as much as 10 years in prison for the posession of two very small cannabis vape cartridges in her luggage when she was arrived at the Moscow airport on February 17, a week before Russia invaded Ukraine. Griner has been playing basketball in Russia for the past seven years during the WNBA off-season and is much beloved in the country. Just a few days ago, on America’s “Independence day”, a hand written letter was delivered to President Biden, from Ms. Griner. She pleaded for him not to forget about her and other Americans detained in Russian, and said, “I’m terrified I might be here forever.” Her impassioned words touched on how much she values the freedom she has in our country, how her father fought for our country in the military, and how she voted for Biden and believes in him. She also humbly added, “I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home.” One of the WNBA’s players unions’ executive director, Terri Jackson, spoke to NPR earlier this week and said of Russia, "They know who they have. She's a hero in their country too. I mean, they love women's basketball. They take their championships very seriously. And let's be clear: she's given them more than a few." With the volitile situation that has grown since the Russian invasion of the Ukraine, the US is keeping a tight lip on what they are doing behind the scenes, but speculation is that they could possible try for a prisoner exchange with Russia for Ms. Griner’s return.
