We’ve seen a few cases like this next one, where a dispensary or retail cannabis store has had owners or managers who keep the tips intended for the bud tenders. In most states this is illegal. This time it happend in Massachusetts. Bud’s Goods and Provisions was named New England’s best cannabis business last year during the recent New England Cannabis Convention. But being the best apparently didn’t carry through to their employees. The shop and it’s CEO were cited by the Fair Labor Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office for breaking a state law that prohibits employers from taking any portion of tips given to retail staff. They have agreed to repay more than $33,000 in tips that were illegally kept from employees at its Abington and Worcester locations. A whistle-blower in the chain’s Abington store said management would collect cash tips that were kept in a locked box behind the counter. The money was used to buy food for employees or converted into store credit that employees could use to buy cannabis products, according to the Attorney General’s Office. Despite some of the tips being used for these employee perks, it’s still illegal, as the employees had the right to the tip money directly, and to do with it as they wish. The shop will now be repaying amounts ranging between $20 to $1,500 for about 65 employees. Comments are closed.
