More and more cannabis companies have seen their employees opt to join unions. The Teamsters in Illinois announced that their Local 777 is now representing another cannabis company, this one is Rise Dispensary, which is a Green Thumb affiliate. The Teamsters Local 777 also had three cannabis companies join them in February, and several more before that, in 2021. Another union representing cannabis employees in Illinois is the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 881, they have several groups of employees join them multiple locations around the state. United Food and Commercial Works is also representing workers in many locations in Michigan, with the latest being the Local 951 announcing that employees at Heritage Provisioning in Battle Creek have just opted to join as well. Many other states have had cannabis employees join local unions. Places such as Massachusetts, Missouri, Rhode Island, and more. A representative from the Teamsters Local 777 in Illinois, Jim Glimco, said, “We are 100% committed to making sure these workers get the wages, benefits and job protections associated with a Teamster contract. ... We’re going to turn cannabis into a field with attractive, sustainable careers for everyone in the industry.” And the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 951 in Michigan also echoed these sentiments. Their president, John Cakmakci, said, “UFCW 951 is committed to raising the standards for all workers in this unique and rapidly developing industry.” William McKenzie, CEO and founder of Left Coast Holdings in Battle Creek where employees just joined the union, looked at this as a positive move. McKenzie said, “It felt like a synergistic move to partner with the union; creating a platform where people can get a good paying job that turns into a career.” Comments are closed.
