What do cars and basketball have in common? Cannabis! We already know cannabis is amazing, and that the plant can be used for recreational fun, for medicine, for food, for oil, for paper, for rope, and for tons and tons of other things. But now it’s also being used for car parts! Isaiah Thomas is a professional basketball player for the Charlotte Hornets, and formerly of the Boston Celtics. Thomas is also an entrepreneur, and a big believer in the power of the cannabis plant. He is the CEO of a company called One World Products, which is a supplier of raw cannabis plant ingredients to major brands, consumer packaged goods, and now… car parts! One World Products will develop and supply hemp-based bioplastic components for cars’ interiors and exteriors. They recently entered an agreement with Stellantis, the sixth-largest automaker worldwide. Stellantis owns brands such as Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Peugeot and more. Another similar company, HempFlax, is also providing the hemp used for car parts. Specifically, they’re working with Mercedes, Bentley, Bugatti and BMW. The CEO of HempFlax, Mark Reinders, says, “Door panels usually consist of plastic and fibre. Hemp is thirty times lighter than glass fibre, which reduces the fuel costs of cars. Also, only one tenth of the energy is needed to produce hemp.” Additionally, hemp fibers are six times stronger than steel. Reinders also pointed out how sustainable hemp is, calling it the most sustainable raw material in the world. He said, “You don’t need pesticides for its cultivation because it grows faster than weeds.” And he added that the yield per hectare is far higher than other crops. He said, “From each hectare of hemp, we harvest [4,400 pounds or 2000 kg] of fiber, compared to about [880 pounds or 400 kg] of cotton.” Comments are closed.
