![]() Cannabis advocates in Nebraska are quickly approaching a July 7th deadline to submit enough signatures to put medical marijuana legalization on the November ballot. The group, Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, said its signature collection efforts will fail unless Nebraskans reach out to them and find a way to sign. They have collected about 60,000 signatures for each of its two initiatives but needs at least another 50,000 signatures before the July 7 deadline. Crista Eggers of Omaha serves as campaign chairman for Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana. She held up a photograph of her 7-year-old son, Colton, who suffers from up to 100 epileptic seizures a day, and said, “This will fail if you don’t step up. We are begging you. Do it for the suffering people in this state who are pleading with you.” Crista Eggers said the FDA approval of medical cannabis is moving much too slowly. She says her son has not responded to the legal medications available in Nebraska. She added, “We don’t know if [medical cannabis] will help him or not,” but “We want the chance.” and noted that it has provided relief for patients in other states. One parent, Nicole Hochstein of Papillion, said allowing her 12-year-old son, Jayen, the opportunity to try a cannabis oil to quell his seizures could prevent him from undergoing an invasive brain surgery that will require him to re-learn how to walk and talk. She said, “If he was in one of 47 other states he could try an oil, underneath his tongue,” Hochstein said. “We have been pleading for help in this state far too long.” The group has set up a website at nebraskamarijuana.org/sign which lists all the locations where voters can sign the petition.
