Many Post Traumatic Stress Disorder patients have stated that THC greatly helps them with symptoms such as migraines, panic attacks and overwhelming emotions. A new study backs that up. Wayne State University in Michigan has just published their research study in the scientific journal, Neuropharmacology, on the effects of THC on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, otherwise known as PTSD. Their research showed that a combination of a specific type of therapy and moderate amounts of THC were particularly beneficial for people with PTSD. The scientists conducted a double-blind experiment where subjects were randomly given either 7.5 mg of THC or a placebo pill. The scientists then had the subjects work on emotional regulation when viewing triggering images repeatedly. The subjects were observed under a Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging machine, or fMRI. They found that only the participants who had consumed the THC pills were actually able to successfully emotionally regulate themselves, and reduce their PTSD while viewing the images. The fMRI showed that the participants who consumed THC had areas of their brain activated which are normally stunted in people with PTSD. There have been other studies on THC and PTSD, as well as many personal testimonials to it’s efficacy. However this study is unique because it is the first one to show that THC was able to successfully help patients reappraise their emotions with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which means they’re more likely to repeat that behavior in the future, reducing further anxiety and negative responses. The study authors concluded that THC could become an effective way of treating these patients and improving their symptoms. Comments are closed.
