The National Football League is funding a study to find better ways to help players deal with injuries sustained in playing football. A committee formed by the NFL and the players union came to an agreement to $1 million to investigate the effects of cannabinoids on pain management and neuroprotection from concussion in elite football players. The study will be carried out in two parts, at separate universities, which the committee chose from a pool of applicants. The study of pain management will be conducted at University of California-San Diego. And the study of on concussions will be done at the University of Regina. Active NFL players will not be permitted to participate in the study. Instead, the study’s participants will be elite profession athletes outside of the league. After game related injuries, the athletes will consume vaporized cannabis, and then be monitored for results. The study will test THC, CBD, and a combination of the two, and compare those to placebo.
