North Carolina currently has no legalized recreational cannabis, nor do they have any sort of medical marijuana program. But now, the Democratic Governor Roy Cooper says he thinks a medical marijuana legalization bill “has an opportunity to pass” in the upcoming legislative session. The Governor also added, “I do believe that we should decriminalize small amounts of marijuana in that it has been applied in a discriminatory way.” On the other side, though, the Republican State House Speaker Tim Moore, downplayed the possibility for a medical marijuana bill passing. Moor said that “there are a lot of concerns” with the currently proposed bill. While the state’s Republican lawmakers may not be supportive, the state’s residents are. A poll released earlier this year found that 82 percent of North Carolinans from both political parties are in favor of legalizing medical cannabis, and 60 percent also approve of legalizing recreational adult use, as well.
