New York City’s Mayor, Eric Adams, wants to put cannabis greenhouses on top of public housing buildings. The comment was made earlier this month while speaking at a conference. WNYC Radio reporter Jon Campbell first reported it, quoting Mayor Adams as saying, “We want to explore the possibility of having greenhouse space on [New York City Housing Authority] rooftops for” cannabis growing. Another news source, Gothamist, included further quotes from the mayor, quoting him elaborating, “The jobs can come from [New York City Housing Authority] residents. The proceeds and education can go right into employing people right in the area.” This past week the Mayor was asked about those comments. They mayor said, “We have to get over the federal hurdle.” And, “I believe there’s a great opportunity for cannabis to be grown on [those] rooftops, with an employment aspect of it and using the medical cannabis aspect of it.” The Mayor also acknowledged that it would take some work to get this accomplished, he addressed his plan, saying, “We’re going to sit down with the federal government and federal agencies, [and] see if it’s a possibility to get a waiver [and] how we can get it done." It is extremely unlikely that rooftop greenhouses will show up on public housing rooftops anytime soon, though, as the federal government funds the NYC Housing Authority, and cannabis is still federally illegal. It is an interesting image, though, to picture something like this happening after federal legalization! Comments are closed.
