The U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently announced they were looking into aquiring portable cannabis annalyzers so they can quickly identify the difference between hemp and THC cannabis plants. They said they would like to be able to determine if “plant material or manufactured products contain cannabinoid-class chemicals and in what quantity.” While THC cannabis remains federally illegal, hemp cananbis plants were federally legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill. The agency’s request states that they want equipement that is easily portable for agents to use, and weigh no more than 15 pounds. They also want the analyzer to show if the plant or product contains more than the federal hemp limit of 0.3 percent THC by dry weight. Also, it must be able to detect nine cannabinoids, including delta-9 THC, delta-8 THC, CBD, CBN and CBG. They further request that the full “analysis cycle” not take more than 12 minutes.
