In Washington, D.C., a Council Labor & Workforce Development committee approved a bill on March 3rd that bans most workplaces from pre-employment marijuana testing. In part, the new bill says it will now be unlawful to require pre-employment testing for any type of marijuana or tetrahydrocannabinols as a condition of employment. The legislation was sponsored by Democratic Councilmember Trayon White. Some employers will still be able to do pre-employment tests for marjijuana, such as those where employees will impact the health of safety of members of the public. This would include police, the Department of transportation, safety-sensitive construction workers, jobs that require a commercial driver’s license, or work with childcare and patients. The bill also states: “Nothing in this act shall be construed to require an employer to permit or accommodate the use, consumption, possession, transfer, display, transportation, sale, or growing of marijuana in the workplace.” Catherine Cole / The M News Now Comments are closed.
