A woman is suing the caterer who allegedly served cannabis laced food at a Florida wedding earlier this year. The wedding took place February 19 in the city of Longwood, Florida, which is just a few miles North of Orlando. According to a report from the Miami Herald, the plaintiff in the suit says at the wedding reception in question, she unknowingly ate food laced with what she called a “poisonous” amount of cannabis and “became immediately ill” from it. The plaintiff was not the only one who fell ill at the wedding reception after eating the catered food. Several others also reported problems. Some guests said they began “feeling weird” and started to feel as if they had been drugged. One guest told a local news station: “I thought I was having a heart attack. My heart was racing.” Other guests complained of stomach pains and even vomited. Because of the alarming - and unexplained - symptoms, first responders were called and a number of guests were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. Deputies collected samples of foods from the event, such as chocolate-covered strawberries, pudding shots, cookies and brownies, and even the lasagna. CNN cited court affidavits which said that some guests tested positive for THC, as well as some of the food, such as the lasagna and the bread, also tested positive for THC. Police questioned the caterer, as well as the bride and groom, who denied accountability and said they didn’t ask for anything to be laced. However, in an affidavit, one guest said that after they asked the bride if the food was spiked, the bride responded “yes” and “acted excited.” Another report said the bride “giggled and shook her head yes.” Another affadavit says that a deputy asked the bride and groom if they had requested or consented to the food being infused with cannabis, and the groom allegedly, “stared at (the deputy) with a blank expression for a few moments before stuttering through a ‘no.’” After a deeper investigation and more interviews, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office reported that the 42-year-old bride and 31-year-old caterer were arrested and charged with violating the Florida Anti-Tampering Act, delivery of marijuana and culpable negligence. CNN reported that affidavits filed in the case allege that the bride “agreed to and allowed the caterer to lace the food she served.” The plaintiff filed her lawsuit against the caterer, accusing the her of negligence and saying she allegedly, “… knew, or should have known, that allowing the food served [by (Joycelyn’s Southern Kitchen)] to be laced with marijuana was reasonably likely to cause injuries and damages to wedding guests.” The lawsuit is seeking more than $30,000 in damages, and the case is on going with the next court date set for next month. Needless to say, drugging someone without their consent is highly illegal in all cases and extremely reckless and careless behavior. Comments are closed.
