This November, voters will head to the polls to show their support for candidates and issues. Out of the four states with the largest populations, two already have legalized recreational cannabis: California and New York. The other two, Texas and Florida, have not. They both have legalized medical cannabis, but not recreational. In Texas, the gubanatorial race is between the incumbent, Republican Greg Abbot, who wants cannabis to remain criminalized, and the Democratic challenger Beto O’Rourke, who supports full legalization. After the primary, the incumbent Republican Greg Abbot looks to still have a strong lead. Nearly 1.3 million people voted for Abbot, while just under 1 million voted for Beto O’Rourke. So despite 60% of Texans being wanting legalized recreational cannabis, it looks like the anti-cannabis Governor Abbot will remain in control of Texas. In Florida, the incumbent Governor Republican Ron DiSantis has made it clear he wants to prevent Florida residents from having access to recreational cananbis. He’s gone on record saying cannabis will not be legalized while he’s in control. The Democrats are still waiting for their primary election on August 23rd to determine who their candidate will be. It’s likelly going to be either former Governor Charlie Crist, or Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, both of whom say they will see that the will of the people is enacted, and that they will make sure cannabis is legalized. It’s looking like Crist may have the edge over Fried for the Democratic candidate. Overall, it’s still could be anyone’s game, but it does appear that DiSantis could be the frontrunner. If so, despite 65% of Floridians being in favor of legalizing recreational cannabis, the anti-cannabis Governor DiSantis would remain in control of Florida. So while it does appear that these states will remain opposed to the majority’s wishes to legalize recreational cannabis, it’s important to remember the many elections that have had suprise results, and also remember that every vote does count, and anything can happen.
